1. Organic Active Ingredients. Expert Formulators.

At Nu-factor®, we believe there is much we can learn from the wisdom of Nature. Our Nu-Born® Collection leverages on science to validate and unleash all the benefits that nature intends. We harness the most effective organic active ingredients and work with top researchers and formulators to deliver products with powerful benefits your skin recognises and appreciates.

2. Extra Safe, Extra Gentle.

The sad truth is that the average child is exposed, through conventional body care products, to harmful chemicals every day – including some associated with cancer, brain and nervous system damage, allergies and hormone disruption.  Nu-Born® products are free of dangerous chemicals including parabens, petrolatum, sulfates, synthetic fragrances and other endocrine disruptors. Ultimately, you will love Nu-Born® – because you only want expertly formulated child care products with the best quality organic ingredients. Extra safe, extra gentle, with maximum benefits.

Our Rational

Think about nourishing your baby’s skin in the same way you think about the food you eat every day. We feel the difference in our health and energy levels when we eat fresh vegetables and fruits rather than processed food filled with chemical additives. Skin responds the same way as our body. The 2 keys to nourish and protect your baby’s skin adequately are:

1. HYDRATE the skin – plump up the hydro-lipid barrier to maintain supple and beautiful skin
2. NOURISH with nutrients to enhance skin health and natural cell renewal.
Through collaboration with experts, Nu-Born®’s range of products leverage on a special blend of
organic honey, oatmeal and collagen. Together with other beneficial organic active ingredients,
Nu-Born® delivers superior child care that will delight both your baby and you.

Organic vs Sythetic

All personal care products contain functional ingredients (like humectants, emollients, surfactants etc) in some combination or another in order to produce effective products. Synthetic ingredients are often used because producing synthetics costs much less than sourcing natural ingredients, and they are readily available and very easy to dilute. Synthetic humectants and emollients are occlusive, meaning they coat the skin and do not allow it to “breathe” (like plastic wrap), which can cause skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients have also been proven to accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes of the body. Synthetic
ingredients are also often not biodegradable and can create a negative environmental impact. We invest heavily in research and development, and choose to use the best organic active ingredients because we know you want the best for your family.

The Use of Phenoxyethanol in Natural Skincare Products

What it is and what it does :
The chemical compound phenoxyethanol can be found naturally in green tea and chicory, but the version used in skin care products is a synthetically produced version in a lab. It is used as a preservative to fight bacteria. Most personal care products are made with a lot of water and a variety of nutrients onsider all of the natural ingredients and botanicals in Nu-factor® products!) which makes an incredibly hospitable breeding ground for microorganisms. What’s worse – the product might smell and look just fine, but be swarming with bacteria or fungi that are dangerous to your health. Effective preservatives are vital for ensuring safety!

Why it is used:

Phenoxyethanol is used in very low concentration as a preservative in our products because the most accessible (and cheaper) alternatives for these types of formulas include parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Both are classes of chemicals with demonstrable evidence of potential health risks, whereas phenoxyethanol is very safe at low levels. It’s been tested on the skin and eyes and it is non-irritating and non-sensitizing at levels of 2.2% or lower, while maintaining effectiveness. It is used in our formulas at well below 1%.

What’s more, it’s included in the Handbook of Green Chemicals and is also Whole Foods Premium Body Care approved. And,their standards, developed by a team of scientists over the course of years, are some of the strictest available. If these two credible sources give it a thumbs-up, we are reassured.

It is true that there are wholly natural preservatives such as hops or grapefruit seed oil, or a number of other natural preservatives. However, they are weak preservatives and have a shorter shelf life once they’re opened and exposed to oxygen, usually 3-6 months, where products preserved with phenoxyethanol have a longer shelf life once opened. It is also about affordability ……. are you in the market for a more than $100 jar of moisturiser with natural preservatives that has to be used in 3 months, or a more affordable jar at a fraction of that cost that’s fine for 12 months once you open it?

Informed Choice:

Alarm bells may go off at the mention of phenoxyethanol for some customers concerned about this ingredient because there’s online controversy about its safety. For others, they will come to the conclusion that at levels of less than 1%, this is a safe preservative to use. We are not here to force one opinion or the other. We produce skin care where if this preservative is used, it is at LESS THAN 1%. Of course, if you have a sensitivity to it, you should stop using it. There are plenty of customers who get rashes from even 100% pure essential oils. Everyone reacts differently to a variety of skin care products, even wholly natural ones. You have to make informed choices and get the skin care that suits you and your family best.

With regard to phenoxyethanol, it must be noted that most of the studies that have found negative health impacts are based full-strength or high-dose exposures. Think of it like a cupcake recipe. You wouldn’t want to eat a mouthful of salt, or raw egg, or flour, or probably any other ingredient that goes into a cupcake. (Not only would it taste disgusting, it could make you sick!) But mixed in just the right amounts, baked just the right way, a cupcake is divine. That’s the magic! Product formulations work the same way, and should be evaluated as a whole.

We’d like to point out a study that helped inform our decision to use it –  a study conducted on pre-term newborn babies (www.unboundmedicine.com : Use of phenoxyethanol and octenidine as antiseptic in premature newborn infants of 23-26 weeks gestation) finding a phenoxyethanol-based antiseptic as the preferred, gentle formula that’s quickly metabolized by even a premature baby’s system.

Meanwhile, it’s the spirit of Nu-factor® and our commitment to you, to always try to do better! While we certainly stand behind the safety of our products, and ensure robust criterias are tested and met, we know there’s always room for improvement. Let us know your experience with our products.
